LLoyds TSB
Lloyds TSB is a leading financial services group based in the UK. They approached Bladerunner to redevelop and operate a health and fitness facility at its office in Andover. Around 1,200 staff work at the site.
Bladerunner operates all of Lloyd TSB’s fitness centres across the country and was invited to view the former health and fitness centre, which was closed in September 2007 because of the lack of staff and the poor condition of equipment.
Initial design and layout
Bladerunner managed the design and build for the facility. Two rooms - the old gym and a table tennis area - were knocked into one to form the main gym space, while the under utilised snooker room was transformed into an exercise studio.
The facility cost £85,000 to complete.

Timescales
The project was completed in just four weeks.
Access
Access to the facility is managed via a membership management system from Lloyds TSB.
Staffing
Three members of staff - a manager, deputy manager and instructor - work in the facility providing constant supervision from Monday to Friday.
As is the standard for all Bladerunner staff, they are highly qualified and on the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) to least at level 2.
Incentives and Marketing of the Gym
Bladerunner’s pre-opening offer included no joining fee and a goody bag worth £50. The target for usage is 450 members and membership is also open to the friends and family of staff.
Local competition comes in the form of Andover Leisure Centre, located directly opposite the Lloyds TSB building, where the company also offers a corporate membership rate for its staff.
Opening Times
The gym is in operation from 6am to 8.30pm, Monday to Friday and from 8am to 2pm on Saturdays. The facility is not supervised on Saturdays.
The Gym
The well equipped gym area includes a range of cardiovascular equipment including treadmills, bikes, cross trainers and rowers, as well as a selection of resistance machines. Supplied by Life Fitness, the equipment complies with the Disability Discrimination Act. There is also a comprehensive free weights area and a dedicated stretching area with stability balls etc.
Studio
The studio has a busy timetable, offering a wide range of classes including Circuits; Boxercise; Legs, Bums & Tums; Conditioning; Abs; Pump; Combat and Group Cycling. More classes will be added to the studio timetable in the future. All classes are included within the cost of membership.
Inductions
All new joiners receive a health screen as well as an induction showing them how to use the equipment. Each member also receives a personalised fitness programme and is reassessed every six months.
The fitness assessment last for 30 minutes and is particularly important if people have never used a gym facility before. Assessments are conducted in separate space to ensure privacy for members.
Service Level Agreements
Regular monthly update meetings take place with the client to review performance against agreed service levels and KPIs for areas such as employee uptake of membership as well as their active usage of the club.
Additional Services
The fitness area offers health screening for members including body fat analysis, cholesterol and blood pressure testing. Wellness checks are also available to all staff throughout the year.
Beauty and massage treatments will be available in April and staff will also have access to two Astro Turf football pitches and tennis courts later this year. Bladerunner will manage these services as they become available.
Cost model
Bladerunner met the cost of the gym build, investing £60,000 in the design and fit out. Lloyds TSB’s Sports and Social Fund contributed £25,000 to the development.
A monthly membership fee for employees was set at £19 and Bladerunner is responsible for the collection of all income and all operating costs.
